¡Hola, mis amores! If you're reading this, it means you're ready to take your first step into the beautiful world of Spanish — my native language, and one I am so proud to share with you. I know how it feels to face a brand new language. When I moved to the United States as a teenager, I had to learn English from scratch. It was hard, but it was worth every moment. Now it's your turn, and I promise — starting with the alphabet makes everything else so much easier. And here's the good news — you already know most of it. The Spanish alphabet is very similar to English, so you're not starting from zero. Think of it like driving a car you've driven before, but in a slightly different city. The rules are mostly the same — you just need to learn a few new streets. The Spanish alphabet has 27 letters — the same 26 letters used in English, plus one special one: ñ (eñe). ### 1. The Letter Ñ (Eñe) The letter ñ is one of the most recognizable letters in Spanish. It looks just like the letter "n," but with a small squiggle on top called a tilde. (For me, I like to think of it as a hat on top of the letter N.) Its sound is similar to the "ny" sound in the English word canyon. Everyday words with ñ: | Spanish | English | | --- | --- | | Spanish | English | | Año | Year | | Niño | Boy/Child | | Niña | Girl/Child | | Piñata | Piñata | | Jalapeño | Jalapeño | Practice the sound with each vowel: Ña — Ñe — Ñi — Ño — Ñu ### 2. The Silent H (Hache) Here's one of the easiest letters in Spanish — the letter H is always silent. Whether it appears at the beginning or in the middle of a word, you simply don't pronounce it. Think of it like a ghost letter — it's there, but you can't hear it. 👻 The only exception is when H teams up with C to form CH, which is pronounced like the "ch" in cheese. Words with a silent H: | Spanish | Pronounced As | | --- | --- | | Spanish | Pronounced As | | Hola | Ola | | Hamaca | Amaca | | Hormiga | Ormiga | | Hoja | Oja | | Ahorrar | Aorrar | | Cohete | Coete | | Prohibir | Proibir | ### 3. The Letter J (Jota) The Spanish J makes a sound similar to the English "H," but a little stronger — imagine fogging up a mirror with your breath. Practice with each vowel: Ja — Je — Ji — Jo — Ju Common words with J: | Spanish | English | | --- | --- | | Spanish | English | | Jardín | Garden | | Juguete | Toy | | Joyas | Jewels | | Jirafa | Giraffe | | Jaguar | Jaguar | ### 4. Letters That Sound the Same Spanish has a few pairs of letters that are pronounced identically. This can be surprising at first, but it actually makes things simpler once you get used to it! #### S and Z In Latin American Spanish, S and Z sound exactly the same. (Note: Spain pronounces them differently — but we're focusing on Latin American Spanish here.) Practice: Sa, Se, Si, So, Su Za, Ze, Zi, Zo, Zu Example words: Zapato — Sapo — Zorro — Salmón #### B and V The letters B and V are also pronounced the same in Spanish. Both make a soft "b" sound. Practice: Ba, Be, Bi, Bo, Bu Va, Ve, Vi, Vo, Vu Example words: Barco — Vaca — Beso — Vestido Don't worry if these sounds feel unfamiliar at first. Your ear will adjust with practice — just like how you eventually stopped thinking about the rules of English! ### 5. The Full Spanish Alphabet | Letter | Sound | Letter | Sound | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Letter | Sound | Letter | Sound | | A | a | Ñ | eñe | | B | be | O | o | | C | ce | P | pe | | CH | che | Q | cu | | D | de | R | ere | | E | e | S | ese | | F | efe | T | te | | G | ge | U | u | | H | hache | V | ve | | I | i | W | doble u | | J | jota | X | equis | | K | ka | Y | i griega | | L | ele | Z | zeta | | LL | elle | | | | M | eme | | | | N | ene | | | ### You're Already on Your Way! Learning the alphabet is your first step — and you just took it. Every Spanish word you'll ever read, write, or speak is built from these 27 letters. Keep practicing the sounds, and before you know it, they'll feel completely natural. ¡Buena suerte, mis amores! (Good luck!) 🎉 Save this post for reference and drop a comment below on which letter surprised you the most! I'll see you in my next post <3
